The RF96 and SX1276 are essentially the same LoRa transceiver silicon — just packaged and sold under slightly different naming schemes. Here’s the breakdown:
SX1276 – The chip from Semtech, supports LoRa modulation and FSK/OOK.
RF96 – A rebranded or variant designation used by HopeRF (and sometimes other vendors) for modules like the RFM95/RFM96.
The RFM96 module uses the SX1276 core chip inside.
So “RF96” is not a different silicon design — it’s more like the module name rather than the IC name.
SX1276: Covers 137–1020 MHz depending on configuration, commonly sold in 433 MHz, 868 MHz, and 915 MHz variants.
RF96/RFM96: Same frequency coverage, but typically offered in 868 MHz or 915 MHz versions.
Both support:
LoRa spread spectrum modulation
FSK, GFSK, MSK, GMSK, and OOK
Programmable bit rates from 300 bps to 300 kbps
LoRa sensitivity up to –148 dBm (depending on bandwidth and spreading factor)
Output power up to +20 dBm with PA_BOOST pin
The RFM95W transceivers feature the LoRaTM long range modem that provides ultra-long range spread spectrum communication and high interference immunity whilst minimising current consumption. RoboticsBD
Using Hope RF’s patented LoRaTM modulation technique RFM95W can achieve a sensitivity of over -148dBm using a low cost crystal and bill of materials. The high sensitivity combined with the integrated +20 dBm power amplifier yields industry leading link budget making it optimal for any application requiring range or robustness. LoRaTM also provides significant advantages in both blocking and selectivity over conventional modulation techniques, solving the traditional design compromise between range, interference immunity and energy consumption. These devices also support high performance (G)FSK modes for systems including WMBus, IEEE802.15.4g. The RFM95W deliver exceptional phase noise, selectivity, receiver linearity and IIP3 for significantly lower current consumption than competing devices. Featured By RoboticsBD.
